Abstract

The compound Ce 3Au 3Sb 4 has been investigated by neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetoresistance measurements. The resistivity shows Kondo lattice behaviour, rather than the semiconducting behaviour reported previously. This appears to be due to a small departure from stoichiometry. The susceptibility displays a peak at 5 K, indicating antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ce moment. The magnetoresistance exhibits a positive sign between 1.8 K and 290 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of two well-defined crystal field transitions at 2.3 meV and 12.7 meV. The spectra have been fitted to determine the crystal field parameters for the tetragonal point symmetry. We conclude that Ce 3Au 3Sb 4 is not a Kondo insulator.
