Abstract

The strategic importance of research in magnetism and magnetic materials is to be recognised by a new funding initiative from the UK Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC). A broad-based programme ranging from fundamental magnetic properties through to magnetic materials and their applications is to be supported initially by £200k each from the SERC Physics Committee's subcommittee W and from the metals and magnetic materials committee of the new Materials Science and Engineering Commission (MSEC). The Science Board will add a further £200k and additional finances will be allocated when the SERC learns the details of its imminent further government allocation.
