Abstract

This review is focused mainly on the correlation between crystal chemistry, electronic structure and magnetic state. A number of features such as low magnetic dimensionality, spin glass and cluster glass, helimagnetism are considered as a result of the predominant or disordered distribution of magnetic cations over the ordered crystal lattice. Multinary semiconductors containing a transition 3d element as one of the major components are reviewed. Namely, magnetic semiconductors, such as CuFeS 2 , KFeS 2 and NaCrS 2 like compounds, II-III 2 -VI 4 polymorph defect chalcogenides (defect chalcopyrite, spinel and layered compounds), I 2 -III-IV-VI 4 type compounds and their solid solutions are summarized. Unique characteristics caused by s-d interaction between localized magnetic moments and delocalized (free) charge carriers are presented.
