Abstract
We report magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements of single-crystal as well as poly-crystalline specimens of CeCuAl 3 with the tetragonal BaAl 4 -type superlattice. The low-temperature specific heat C of either sample exhibits a peak at 2.3∼2.8 K due to the antiferromagnetic transition, but even above the Neel temperature, C / T attains a large value of about 0.8 J/K 2 mol-Ce, suggesting that CeCuAl 3 is a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet. The observed anisotropic susceptibility is well fitted to the calculated one based on a single-ion crystalline field model.
