Abstract

Results of a temperature-dependent study of the magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy for ${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$: ${\mathrm{Ti}}^{3+}$ are reported for the first time. Measurements were made using a Faraday balance and a sensitive torsion balance over the temperature range 1-350 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}K. The data could be described using the previously observed spectroscopic parameters, and estimates of the Van Vleck susceptibility for all three trigonal states are obtained. The value ${g}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{g}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}^{2}=\ensuremath{-}0.40$ for the second excited state differs in sign from Macfarlane's calculated value.
