Abstract

The electronic and magnetic states of metallic thin films are theoretically studied on the basis of the uniform jellium model within a framework of the local spin density approximation. For a given average electron density, the magnetic structure is found to change successively as a function of the film thickness D. For r s =6 a.u., the paramagnetic, the ferromagnetic, and the antiferromagnetic states are found. In Cs and Rb, r s is about 5.5, and so we expect very thin films of Cs and Rb to be magnetic.
