Abstract

We propose a method of utilizing a simple symmetric Fe3O4-SiO2-Fe3O4 configuration to create bright color appearance, high-color contrast, bidirectional, and orientable magnetic structural colors. Absorption at complementary color wavelengths is significantly enhanced and reflection at the unwanted wavelengths is effectively lowered, leading to the improved purity of the desired reflective color. Selected full structural colors are demonstrated using conventional electron beam evaporation combined ion-assisted deposition. Anti-counterfeiting image butterfly pattern presents dynamic petal-like three dimensional (3D) effects by orienting magnetic interference flakes to verify color printing. This structure scheme is safe with low fabrication cost, and its novel magnetic properties can be used in the design and application of magneto-photonic devices based on iridescence.
