Abstract

A 72-year-old woman underwent repair of a 4-cm hiatal hernia with placement of a magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) device for persistent symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Four months after her procedure, she experienced an acute episode of severe noncardiac chest pain followed by recurrent symptoms of heartburn, belching, and regurgitation. She did not recall any significant symptoms or events that triggered her pain. Notably, she had lost and regained 3.5 kg after the procedure. Her physical examination results were notable for normal vital signs, a body mass index of 33.5 kg/m2, and a soft, nontender abdomen.
