Abstract

AbstractGeneral expressions are given for the self‐correlation functions and two particle cross‐correlation functions regarding the electrical field gradient caused by the ions in the electrolyte solution. The important case of electrostatic field gradients (i.e. of point charges) is treated with particular emphasis. The quenching of quadrupole interactions due to ion cloud formation around a given ion is described. Modifications of the water‐water cross‐correlation function in the presence of ions and the ion‐water cross‐correlation functions are discussed. Fairly general formulae for the relaxation rate including special structural effects and contributions of electronic field gradients are derived.
