Abstract Consideration is given to processes of magnetic reconnection that occur in collisionless regimes typical of space plasmas for the case of a magnetic field containing a neutral surface where the magnetic field vanishes. It is shown that a significant departure of the ion or electron distribution from the Maxwellian, such as represented by a slight temperature anisotropy, may produce a faster rate of reconnection than typical of spontaneous processes driven by the current density gradient associated with the magnetic field configuration in question.
