Abstract
The microstructure and magnetic properties of as-deposited and annealed Fe−x wt% Be (5.6≤x≤50) alloy films on glass, mica and NaCl single crystal were examined. The magnetic easy direction was found to be in plane of the film and the microstructure of as-deposited films appeared to be amorphous. When the temperature of the substrate was increased, the microcrystals of fcc structure (a = 5.63 Å) FeBe2 were found in the as-deposited films. The FeBe2 and BeO phases formed as the Fe−x wt% Be (21.8 ≤ x ≤ 28.5) binary films were subjected to annealing at 275 °C for 2 h. The formation of FeBe2 microcrystals induces the intrinsic coercivity and saturation magnetization to increase. The variation of saturation magnetization with annealing temperature was examined. The deterioration of magnetization for the samples annealed at a temperature higher than 400°C was concluded as the formation of the Fe3O4 phase.
