Abstract

Magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on theS=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system Sr14−xYxCu24O41, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladder chains of copper ions. The experimental results show that the simple chain in Sr14Cu24O41 has a spin gap in the excitation spectrum, which originates from a dimerized state. We have also studied the effect of Y3+ substitution for Sr2+ site on the dimerized state. It was found that the yttrium substitution suppresses the gap energy drastically.
