Abstract
Due to short Fe-Fe distances in the R 2Fe 14B structure, 3d interactions are reduced and strongly distance dependent. The value of the Fe moment depends on local environment. The 4f moment is determined by dominant 3d-4f interactions and CEF interactions. High order CEF terms must be considered in the 4f anisotropy. The structure of the R 1+ϵFe 4B 4 compounds is composed of two distinct, but interacting, sublattices. The rare-earth sublattice is ferromagnetic at low temperatures.
