Abstract

151Eu and 57Fe Mössbauer measurements as well as magnetic susceptibility studies have been carried out to investigate the magnetic properties of the ThCr 2Si 2-type arsenides EuM 2As 2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Pd) and the new compounds LnFeAs (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) with PbFCl-type structure. The Eu compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic ordering of the europium sublattices. The Néel temperatures determined from susceptibility and 151Eu Mössbauer data are in excellent agreement. The experimental magnetic moments as well as the 151Eu isomer shifts confirm the divalent state of the Eu ions. The exchange interactions between the Eu 2+ ions are ascribed to the RKKY mechanism. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of EuFe 2As 2; and LaFeAs show magnetic phase transitions in the iron sublattice and for EuFe 2As 2 an antiferromagnetic ordering could be directly observed. Itinerant magnetism is suggested for the iron sublattices in EuFe 2As 2 and LaFeAs. The 151Eu isomer shifts and the saturation values of the magnetic flux densities follow a linear relation for the arsenides as well as for the corresponding silicides, germanides and phosphides with ThCr 2Si 2 type structure.
