Abstract

The R 5Pd 2 (R = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) intermetallic compounds crystallize in the cubic Dy 5Pd 2-type structure while that with gadolinium crystallizes in the hexagonal Th 7Fe 3-type. The samples were obtained in polycrystalline form by the induction melting. The electrical resistivity, AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements show a complex transport and magnetic behaviour of these compounds mainly due to the frustration effect. The XPS measurements revealed the formation of the narrow Pd 4d band below the Fermi level.
