Abstract

We present specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and magneto-resistance measurements on melt-spun Al 86Mn 14, Al 75Mn 20Si 5 and Al 69Mn 23Si 8 quasicrystalline, sputtered Al 85Mn 15 and Al 80Mn 20 amorphous, as well as crystalline o-Al 6Mn and β-Al 9Mn 3Si alloys. The hyperfine specific heat term measured at very low temperatures ( T < 0.2 K) and the temperature T f of the a.c. susceptibility maximum (indicative of a spin glass transition) reveal quite similar magnetic behaviours for both the icosahedral and the amorphous phases, with an increasing magnetic character as the manganese concentration is raised. In contrast, the crystalline phases show no evidence for the presence of magnetic moments. A specific property of the icosahedral phases, in comparison with the classical spin glass behaviour, seems to be the strongly non-linear temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat below the freezing temperature.
