Abstract

Thin films of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) were deposited on single crystals of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) (1 1 1) and Si (1 0 0) substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The films deposited at substrate temperature ( T s ) of 750°C on GGG substrates show textured YIG phase. However, films deposited on Si substrates at T s of 600–750°C, show YFeO 3 phase along with one YIG (4 0 0) peak. For a T s of 850°C only one peak of very low intensity is observed which is close to (8 2 0) of YIG and (2 3 1) of YFeO 3 .
