Abstract

The magnetization curves of plastically deformed Gd-single crystals were investigated in the temperature range between 200 K and the Curie point. The deformation dependence of the parameters of the Rayleigh region could be explained by the magnetoelastic coupling between domain walls and dislocations. The dislocation density was found to increase linearly with the strain. The differential susceptibility in the approach to saturation was found to be composed of three contributions: paraprocess, non-magnetic inclusions (Gd 2O 3), and spin inhomogeneities around dislocations.
