Abstract

Few oxides containing six-coordinated iron (IV) or (V) are known. Recently, the phases Sr 0.5La 1.5Li 0.5Fe 0.5O 4 and La 2LiFeO 6 have been prepared; X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of these oxides can be interpreted as the result of an ordering of the lithium and iron atoms. Magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer resonance and neutron diffraction measurements have also been performed on these two phases. They lead to an antiferromagnetic ordering of the moments at 31 K and 14.5 K for iron (IV) and (V) respectively. For Sr 0.5La 1.5Li 0.5Fe 0.5O 4, magnetic lines of the neutron diffractograms at low temperature involve a helimagnetic propagation vector Q = 0.49(2 π/ a) [110] →A -1. For La 2LiFeO 6 a helimagnetic structure has also been found. All these properties are compared to those of the perovskite SrFe IVO 3.
