Abstract

Magnetization measurements have been performed on the pseudobinary compounds (La 1− x Nd x )Co 5 and their hydrides (La 1− x Nd x )Co 5H y . The substitution of La for Nd leads to a lowering of the temperature ( T R) at which the easy magnetization direction changes ( c-axis → a-axis). The value of T R decreases with La-concentration (1− x). The influence of the hydrogen absorption on T R is the same as that of the substitution of La for Nd. The lowering of T R can be interpreted by the weakening of the Nd=Co coupling which is induced by the substitution of La for Nd and the hydrogen absorption.
