Abstract

The ternary intermetallic compound TbPdAl with the hexagonal ZrNiAl-type crystal structure undergoes two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T N1=43 K and T N2=22 K. We have oriented a TbPdAl powder sample in an external magnetic field and studied the magnetic anisotropy and the magnetic phase diagram by magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements. Below T N1 the susceptibility curves exhibit a considerable difference between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled branches and a small magnetic field of 1.2 T along the magnetically easy c-axis is able to destroy the geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetic structure and to induce a ferromagnetic-like structure.
