Abstract

The magnetic properties of FeSiAl soft magnetic composites based on mechanically crushed powder are investigated under transverse magnetic field. Experimental results indicate that the permeability decreases about 8% when a transverse magnetic field is applied in the core, but the magnetic losses reduce more than 20%. Magnetic loss separation under low magnetic field shows that the loss reduction of the core under transverse magnetic field is mainly due to the reduction of hysteresis loss, and the hysteresis loss reduces about 45%. Magnetic loss separation under high magnetic field also gives similar results, and the hysteresis loss reduces about 31%. The reduction of hysteresis loss and permeability is attributed to the enlargement of domain size under transverse magnetic field. The enlargement of domain size leads to a decrease in the amount of domain walls participating in the wall displacement and makes the spin rotation more difficult; both these two effects result in reduction of hysteresis loss and permeability.
