Abstract

Multilayered films were prepared by alternate deposition of Fe and Tb in ultrahigh vacuum ( p ≤ 10 -9mbar) on Kapton substrates at 295 K. We have investigated samples with a Fe-layer thickness of 10 Å and with a Tb-layer thickness of 26 Å. 57Fe-Mössbauer and SQUID-magnetization studies have shown: (1) There is significant intermixing of Tb in the Fe layers. (2) Despite this, there is perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. (3) In the Fe layer at 4.2 K, the Fe moments are antiparallel to the (intermixed) Tb moments.
