Abstract

Recently, progress of intelligent materials has played a big role in the development of science and technology. We have tried to develop ferromagnetic shape memory alloys to expand application range of the nonmagnetic shape memory alloys, which are typical intelligent material. However, we have not yet obtained a sufficient result, because the magnetic property and the shape memory effect (SME) are in a relation of tradeoff. We have then tried to develop ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys as a composite material using the single-roll melt spinning technique. They are bilayer ribbons consisting of a shape memory layer (Fe-Mn-Cr-Si-B) and a magnetic layer (6.5 wt%Si-Fe-B). The developed bilayer ribbons showed fragile and quite low SME. In this paper, to improve the both shape memory and magnetic properties, effect of Si contents (from 3.5% to 6.5%) of Si-Fe/Fe-Mn-Cr-Si-B bilayer ribbon is investigated.
