Abstract

Magnetic properties of Au4(Mn1-xCrx) and Au4(Mn1-xVx) are presented as typical examples to represent the sensitive magnetic transitions depending on the choice of X atoms in the Au4X type alloys. In the former, the ferromagnetic alloy (Tc ~ 360 °K at x = 0) changes into the antiferromagnetic alloy (TN ~ 380 °K at x = 1), the transition occurring at x ~ 0.8. The paramagnetic Curie point changes smoothly from positive at low x to negative at high x passing through zero near x = 0.8. In the second system, all the alloys are ferromagnetic. However, the magnetic moment of V deviates from the value of 2 µβ, expected from the structural requirements, at x ~ 0.4, as x increases, and reaches the value of 1 µβ at x = 1.
