Abstract

The influence of heat treatments on the magnetization σ of AuMn alloys with 10·7, 15·6 and 20·1 at% Mn has been investigated by the method of constant field gradient in fields from 3 to 15 kOe and at temperatures from 4 to 600 K. It is inferred from the σ data obtained that there is a tendency to order in which each Mn ion is surrounded by Au atoms only as nearest neighbours. These ordered states are ferromagnetic. While long range order can be obtained in the alloy Au 4Mn, complete long range or short range order is not obtainable in the alloys with 15·6 and 10·7 at.% Mn. Extrapolation gives 4·1 μ B /Mn ion for all the alloys in the ferromagnetic states. The σ data of the Au 4 Mn alloy in the ordered state have been analysed in greater detail by standard methods. A survey of paramagnetic data available for alloys with 0–20 at.% Mn is given. Finally, some results have been achieved regarding the phase diagram of the AuMn system.
