Abstract

The saturation magnetization per Mn atom P s at 4.2 K was obtained with a relation P s =3.8 y µ B for y c < y <0.35 and P s =2.8 y µ B for y < y c in Mn 0.5 V 0.5- y Al y . Here y c ≈0.2 which corresponds to the concentration at the boundary between B2 and L2 1 (Heusler) structures. The 55 Mn NMR frequency at 4.2 K also appeared to increase with increasing y . On the other hand, the value of P c which is defined by C = N µ B 2 P c ( P c +2)/3 k in relation to the Curie constant C , has almost the same value as P s for y c < y <0.35, but P c for y < y c is very different from P s . The Curie temperature T C and the paramagnetic Curie point θ p showed maximum values 760 and 800 K, respectively, at y =0.25. The present results indicate that there is no direct correlation of T C or θ p with the Mn magnetic moment.
