Abstract

A detailed investigation of the structure of Ho19Co81 sputter-deposited amorphous films has been carried out by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. A columnar structure which is amorphous and is well developed along the thickness direction contains microcrystalline regions which provide a clear lattice image in the micrographs. Such microcrystalline regions distribute locally and the structure is very close to that of HoCo5 intermetallic compounds. The change in magnetization in an isothermal annealing experiment in vacuum is also discussed. The activation energy which was deduced from the temperature dependence of the 50% change of magnetization was found to be 0.56 eV.
