Abstract

We present a comprehensive investigation of the magnetocaloric properties of Gd3In and its potential for use in magnetic refrigeration. We aim to discuss its magnetocaloric effect using Density Functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that Gd contributes to the total magnetic moment in Gd3In, with a value of 7.21 μB per formula. Gd3In has a critical temperature Tc=240K leading to a transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior. The maximum entropy change (-ΔS) and the adiabatic temperature change (ΔTadiabatic) attain values of 4.7 J/kg.K and 7.9 K, respectively, under an applied magnetic field of H = 5 T.
