Abstract

It is shown that maghemitization (low temperature oxidation of titano-magnetite to titanomaghemite) can account for the recently discovered characteristic features of natural remanent magnetization of dredge basalts from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, that is, (i) more than an order of magnitude difference in the natural remanent magnetization intensity between the axial and flank basalts and (ii) the time required for the change in the NRM, which is about two million years.
