Abstract

The general concepts of magnetic polarons are introduced to show their fundamental aspects. This chapter is focused on their optical response. The exciton magnetic polaron induces various interesting band-edge optical properties in diluted magnetic semiconductors, and is considered to involve the photo-induced magnetic spin orientation as well as exciton localization itself. Exciton localization processes induced by magnetic polaron formation and alloy potential fluctuations are discussed in detail, based on the photoluminescence data. Then we review recent progress in the study of exciton magnetic polarons, based on optical spectroscopy, utilizing steady-state and transient photoluminescence techniques in temperature and in magnetic field. This article covers exciton magnetic polarons and their related phenomena in bulk diluted magnetic semiconductors and in their quantum structures.
