Abstract

This paper presents the results of studies on three magnetostratigraphic sections which were examined in an effort to resolve absolute chronological ages for the Pliocene Coimadai, Parwan and Boxlea Local Faunas. Differences in polarity between the Bullengarook flow and its supposed correlative at the Parwan locality indicate that previous age determinations were incorrect. New ages of 4.06–4.20 Ma and > 4.06 Ma for the Parwan and Boxlea Local Faunas, respectively, are proposed. An age of 3.35–3.82 Ma is indicated for the Coimadai Local Fauna, the first non‐palaeontological age constraint for this locality.
