Abstract

Temperature dependence of dc and ac susceptibilities of K 2 Cu x Co 1- x F 4 , a random mixture having competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, has been measured to reveal magnetic properties, especially a temperature vs. concentration phase diagram. It has been found that there exist ferromagnetic (1≥ x >0.84), spin-glass (0.84> x >0.5) and antiferromagnetic (0.5> x ≥0) regions. The ferromagnetic phase is composed of three distinct phases, i.e., planar, oblique and axial ones, due to competing XY and Ising anisotropies of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ ions, respectively. In the spin-glass region, freezing of longitudinal and transverse spin components successively occurs at different temperatures, indicating a two-dimensional Ising spin-glass character.
