Abstract

The magnetic phase transitions of Er2Fe17C1.5 have been investigated on the basis of ferrimagnet phenomenological models, using oriented and free-to-rotate polycrystalline powders. First-order spin reorientation transitions (SRT) and magnetization processes (FOMP) have been observed. It turns out that interstitial C induces a SRT to an easy-cone state; the occurrence of FOMP can only be explained including sixth-order anisotropy terms.
