Abstract

Specific heat and neutron diffraction experiments on polycrystalline samples as well as magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the hexagonal DyAlGa compound are presented. Just below T N = 50 K the magnetic structure is sine wave modulated, characterized by the propagation vector Q 1 = ( 1 3 , 1 3 , 1 2 ) , the Dy moments being along c. At low temperature the appearance of the third-order harmonic of the propagation vector shows that the structure becomes an equal-moment antiferromagnetic structure. Along c, multistep metamagnetic behaviour (three transitions at 1.4 K) is observed, from which the H-T phase diagram has been determined. A comparison with the isomorphous HoAlGa allowed the field-induced magnetic structures to be deduced.
