Abstract

A complex magnetic phase diagram is confirmed for the two series of intermetallics Y 2Co 17− x Fe x and Pr 2Co 17− x Fe x . In the Pr system, various first-order-field-induced processes (FOMP) corresponding to type 1, type 2 and double FOMP occur in different compositional intervals. Transitions are also observed above room temperature, where high-order anisotropy terms (required to describe a FOMP in a rigidly coupled model) are usually negligible. The presence of the double FOMP is justified if canting angles between the magnetic sublattices are allowed during the magnetisation process.
