Abstract

We have investigated the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of a compound of nominal composition PrSi 1.33 by means of neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. The crystal structure of this compound was found to be orthorhombic with two formula units Pr 2Si 3 per unit cell, comprising two Pr sites and three Si sites. Refinement showed that the one of the Si positions is occupied only for 72% leading to the formula composition Pr 2Si 3−δ with δ = 0.28. The compound orders ferromagnetically at about 100 K with the Pr moments oriented along the c-direction. There is a strong difference in the magnitude of the Pr moments between the two sites (3.06 and 1.85μ B/Pr) and also the temperature dependences of the two corresponding sublattice moments are completely different.
