Abstract
We have grown PrRu 2 Si 2 and PrRu 2 Ge 2 single crystals and measured the magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, electrical resistivity as functions of temperature and magnetic field. According to our observations PrRu 2 Si 2 exhibits all attributes of antiferromagnetic ordering of the Pr 3 + moments below T N ( = 16 K ) . At T C = 13.9 K a transition to a ferromagnetic ground state was observed. PrRu 2 Ge 2 behaves as a ferromagnet with T C = 14 K . Irrespective to the type of magnetic ordering both compounds show giant uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy reflecting confinement of the Pr moments in the c -axis. The apparent paramagnetic response within the basal plane down to lowest temperatures that is consistent with the giant value of the energy of magnetocrystalline anisotropy indicates negligible transversal fluctuations of Pr moments. Stability of the AF phase PrRu 2 Si 2 with respect to applied magnetic field is studied in detail.
