Abstract

A new type of neutron source (the spallation neutron source) expands the region of available incident neutron energies into the eV region. This opens e.g. the field of inelastic magnetic scattering experiments with energy transfers of up to several hundred meV. The possibilities and first results on magnetic excitations from 4f and 5f moments in this energy region are discussed together with the severe kinematical restrictions imposed by the neutron scattering process if even higher energy transfers at low momentum transfer are aimed at. Examples include crystal field excitations, intermultiplet transitions and the magnetic response of unstable moment systems.
