Abstract

A brief review is given of some of the new concepts which have arisen in quantum field theory, stimulated in part by insights gained from the S-matrix and dual string approaches. These concern soliton states not created by the original fields, but carrying topological quantum numbers, conservation laws related to integrability conditions, supersymmetry and hidden extra dimensions. In Minkowski space time the new approach to the theory of magnetic monopoles started by `t Hooft and Polyakov brings together many of these ideas.
