Abstract

Magnetic moments of atomic, molecular and nuclear systems are common topics in physics courses at all levels. In modern physics and quantum mechanics an extremely important class of problems is that of two body systems where the orbital motion of the two particles is described by a spherical harmonic wave function. The magnetic moment operator in this case is more complicated than the single particle case where L = r × p and M = (q/2mc)L. The two particle problem is considered below in terms of the constituent angular momenta and an expression for the magnetic moment is found which is convenient to apply directly onto spherical harmonics.
