Abstract

Proton magnetic relaxation rates were measured in solutions of ferric perchlorate with stoichiometric concentrations ranging from 10—1 to 4×10—5 molar, at pH's between 0 and 12. It is found that the magnetic moments of Fe(OH)2(+1) and Fe(OH)(+2) are equal to that of Fe(+3) (5.9 Bohr magnetons), while Fe2 (OH)2 (+4) is diamagnetic. The experimental results suggest that the equilibrium constant for the formation of Fe2 (OH)2 (+4) from Fe (+3) is 1×10—2 moles/l at 20°C.
