Abstract
Magnetic materials have recently emerged as a new class of materials that are being used for water treatment purposes, which offer the use of magnetically separable photocatalysts and adsorbents. After significant advancements in the emerging field, several synthesis routes have been designed for the fabrication of efficient magnetic materials with suitable properties for water treatment applications. This chapter gives a compact and precise knowledge of the magnetic phenomenon, types of magnetism and magnetic materials, their synthesis and how they have been used in various ways to treat the polluted water. The characteristic tools and the methodology involved in determining the properties of magnetic materials have been explained for the reader’s convenience. Two major classes of magnetic materials, i.e., iron-based magnetic materials and titania-based magnetic materials, have been discussed briefly with several case studies included as well. Furthermore, a critical analysis of the recent advancements and prevailing challenges has been given, and significant solutions have been proposed for researchers.
