Abstract

A nanometre-scale logic gate that is made entirely from metal and operates at room temperature has been developed by physicists in the UK. According to Russell Cowburn and co-workers at the University of Durham, the ferromagnetic NOT gate is a new class of component that could lead to a wide range of other magnetic logic devices. The team has also created a magnetic shift register by linking the gates together (D Allwood et al. 2002 Science 296 2003).
