Abstract

Abstract We calculate the magnetic interactions between impurities fluctuating between two magnetic configurations. Using Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory, we obtain the effective coupling J ( R ) in the intermediate valence regime. In this regime J ( R ) decays in an oscillatory way with the interionic distance R . It shows a noticeable asymmetry favoring antiferromagnetic coupling between impurities. Far away from the intermediate valence regime the RKKY behaviour of J ( R ) is recovered.
