Abstract

Abstract We report heat capacity measurements on annealed polycrystalline samples of UNi x Pt 1 − x ( x = 1, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, 0.2, 0) in zero field and in a 6 T magnetic field, over the temperature range 2 to 70 K. Anomalies are seen in UPt and UNi 0.2 Pt 0.8 , at 26.2 and 14.8 K. UNi and UNi 0.8 Pt 0.2 show no signs of magnetic order. Weak transitions have been noted in several compounds, but their behaviour on annealing and correlation between compounds indicates their origin is probably due to mixed phases. An applied field of 6 T has no effect on the transition temperatures. The electronic heat capacity term γ decreases roughly linearly from 80 mJ K −2 mol −1 for UPt to 25 mJ K −2 mol −1 for UNi and is unaffected by an applied field of 6 T.
