Abstract

Spacecraft relative motion actuated by inter-craft electromagnetic force/torque provides an attractive way without propellant consumption and plume contamination, and has high-precision control capability of continuous, reversible, synchronous and non-contacting. However, magnetic actuation is limited with distance, yielding a small operating region. Magnetic actuation far-distance delivery based on plasma loop is a revolutionary approach which freezes strong magnetic field in the plasma loop and shoots it with ultra-high speed, and could be exploited to greatly expand the operating region of magnetic actuation. In this paper, the basic principle, capability, and application with companion spacecraft electromagnetic capture are analyzed.
