Precession and the oblique rotator model. Shore, S. N. ; Adelman, S. J. Abstract A global view of magnetic-field structure as it pertains to the nature and general properties of the phenomenon of spectrum variability of peculiar A stars is formulated in the context of the magnetic diffusion mechanism. Arguments relating to the stability of starspots are given in terms of the magnetic field and rotation. Some observational tests are suggested. The magnetic field is shown to cause departures of the star from sphericity, and this results in long-term free-body precession for Ap stars of the shortest rotational periods. The effect of a close companion on such a star is examined briefly. Observed consequences and problems are discussed.
