D., Jr. Abstract A technique was developed for measuring stellar magnetic fields which avoids the limitation of measurements to residual fields and dilution of the signal by nonmagnetic areas on the stellar surface. The method deduces Zeeman splitting by accurate measurements of changes in the line shape caused by magnetic fields: it compares the profile from a magnetically sensitive line with that of a magnetically insensitive line with similar spectral characteristics. The advantage of this technique lies in its measuring of absolute values of field strength together with the fraction of the visible hemisphere of the star covered by the fields; however, the method is insensitive to field strengths below 1000 Gauss.
