Abstract

A program is underway to study the effect of a magnetic field on the thermal conductivity of technically important materials such as Inconels, stainless steels, and superconductor stabilizing materials such as copper and aluminum. The apparatus used to measure the thermal conductivity in magnetic fields up to 80 kOe and in the temperature range 4 to 20 K is described. Results obtained for the NiCrFe alloy (Inconel 718) and a high purity copper specimen will be presented. These results indicate that for the alloy the field effect is small, as expected, since lattice conduction is dominant. The effect of an 80 kOe is to reduce the conductivity by 8% at 5 K and 3% at 19 K. The effect of an 80 kOe field is to reduce the conductivity of the high purity copper specimen by 77% at 5 K and 73% at 20 K.
